Name: Grotta della neve (o del Collegio)
Location: Contrada SS Cristo, elevation approx. 1160m
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: this volcanic cave was transformed into an icehouse to store the snow accumulated during the winter for consumption in the summer months. The arched vault is partially collapsed.
ENTRANCE: Free/Outdoor attraction
GEOLOGY: Along the road to reach the ice cave, you can observe the various 17th century lava flows that occurred from 1614-1624.
HOW TO GET THERE:
By car: you can park along the basalt road through the volcanic park, or at the refuge at Piano dei Grilli.
by foot: From the start of the basalt road, the Grotto is several km distance. However, from the Piano dei Grilli it is approx. 400 m to the grotto.
